1. Check the Harness Fit

Children grow quickly over the summer. Make sure the harness still fits properly and passes the “pinch test.” You shouldn’t be able to pinch any excess webbing at your child’s shoulders.

2. Verify the Harness Height

Rear-facing harness straps should be at or just below your child’s shoulders. Forward-facing harness straps should be at or just above the shoulders. Refer to your car seat manual for your specific model’s requirements.

3. Check the Expiration Date

Car seats don’t last forever. Find the expiration date on the manufacturer’s label or in the owner’s manual to ensure the seat is still safe to use.

4. Inspect for Damage

Take a close look at the harness, buckle, shell, and other components. If you notice cracks, frayed webbing, or missing parts, stop using the seat until you’ve contacted the manufacturer.

5. Confirm the Installation

Car seats can loosen over time. Grab the seat at the belt path and make sure it moves less than one inch from side to side and front to back.

6. Don’t Forget the Top Tether

If your child rides in a forward-facing harnessed seat, make sure the top tether is attached and tightened. The top tether helps reduce forward head movement during a crash.

7. Clean Out the Crumbs

Summer road trips often leave behind snacks, dirt, and spills. While a little mess isn’t unusual, clean the seat according to the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid harsh cleaners that could damage safety materials.

8. Review Carpool Rules

If grandparents, babysitters, or other parents help with school drop-off or pickup, make sure they know how to correctly buckle and secure your child every ride.
